Human society functions on a very simple system; those in power make the laws, and those not in power may choose to follow them or to face the consequences. This concept, while it is a relatively basic tenet of human existence, is neither new nor exclusively human. Man, in all his folly, forgets that all things are bound by laws, the words to some of which have been lost. Even those that mankind views as invulnerable and all powerful most submit to the power of those who rule over them.
These eight Heavenly Laws were set in motion long before mankind began to create his own rules. They pertain not only to human beings, but to gods, demons, and the Earth itself.
1. The authority of the Heavenly Ruler is absolute.
2. Heaven, Hell, and Earth exist within their own separate realms.
3. Gods, Demons and Humans belong in separate realms: Gods in Heaven, Demons in Hell, and Humans on Earth.
4. Time on Earth may only flow forward, as governed by the River of Time. However, Heaven and Hell are outside the River, and are therefore timeless.
5. The lives of all Humans have been decided by Fate.
6. Neither Gods nor Demons may alter the course of Fate.
7. All Human lives must be completed within the time that Fate has alloted them.
8. Gods and Demons may interact with Humans, but are advised not to reveal themselves.
When the world was young and the Gods newly appointed, it seemed the Heavenly Ruler had invented a near-flawless system. The Gods ruled over their stations with concrete authority, and Demons, true to their greater nature, did their best to undermine that authority, tempting humans to do the same. This struggle set the natural order of things in motion, and the Heavenly Ruler stood aloof from the universe, watching silently in contentment because all was well with this creation.
Natural as the order of things may have been, it was soon shattered by an uprising of angry demons wishing to fill far more important shoes. They felt it was unfair that the gods should wield so much power over the Earth when demons were so many and gods so few. This sentiment touched off a war between the two opposing powers, gods and demons battling one another for more than a hundred years with only Earth as their common battleground.
Though it was long in coming, a treaty was eventually reached between the two sides, as Hell had no chance of winning and Heaven could not afford to lose another god or goddess. The demons were given reign to interact with human beings in an attempt to claim their souls for Hell, though the gods retained the individual right to interfere with a demon's plans if that god felt the demon was overstepping his boundaries. Things soon settled into a familiar rhythm, with gods on one side and demons opposed in a silent agreement.
It quickly became clear, however, that all was not as it had once been. The Heavenly Ruler abandoned the role of silent watcher, and soon a concept that had never been considered was forced to the forefront of everyone's mind; the identity of said Heavenly Ruler, who seemed to be not one entity, but two. The twin Rulers introduced themselves as Calyen and Shira, and— after providing proper proof of their identity— announced that they would be taking a more active role to prevent further disputes.
Trouble spreads quickly, and it seems that Hell is already mustering its armies in case an attack against Heaven should arise. With all this chaos stirring, it's no wonder an attack on their Heavenly neighbors seems to be the least of their concerns. As Heaven shuffles uncomfortably and Earth struggles to rebuild itself, it seems that something strange and unfamiliar is afoot.
What will be the ultimate fate of these three so closely linked realms?
